HOW WE GOT OUR NAME

At the beginning of spring 2022, I decided to jump all into my homesteading dreams. With the support of my loved ones, I started my homestead with rabbits and a few chickens. As my homestead grows, I can't wait to see what is in store.
I have struggled with being chronically ill and having anxiety, depression, dyslexia, and other neurodivergence my whole life. Through my early years, I struggled as I tried to figure out who I was. By the time I graduated high school, I was able to get my dog, Hazel.

She was trained to be my service dog. She gave me an independence I thought I wouldn't have. Hazel helped me reconnect to my love of nature and find myself again. We would go explore the local beauty. Hazel came to me at a time when I needed guidance and companionship in my life. Though we only had a short time together, she taught me so much about how to live life to the fullest. You only get a dog like that once in your life. She will always hold a special place in my heart.

For me, the "brook" in Hazelbrook represents the words of wisdom my mom (Lorrine B. Kelley) gave me throughout my life. She was an amazing, strong woman who supported her loved ones with all her being. She loved everyone unconditionally and helped her community.

Brooks have always symbolized renewal and rejuvenation. They embody a calming yet energetic presence—a reminder of ancestral spirits guiding us to live joyfully. Brooks flow, gracefully dancing through nature. They are a reminder to dance every chance we get, something my mom always lived by.

As I go through life, I have a burning desire to reconnect with nature and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. I also want to help as many people as I can as I grow my homestead. I want to teach what I learn and share what I make on my homestead with my community.

Hazelbrook strives to live life more simply, reconnect with nature, and explore the beauty in the world, as well as to love unconditionally and support our community. I know that my mom and Hazel would be proud of what I am doing. In honor of their influence on my life, Hazelbrook was born.
